BEIJING, July 25 (RIA Novosti) - At least eight people, including a child, were killed on Friday as a mosque under construction collapsed in northwest China, the Xinhua news agency said.
The accident occurred in the Xiajiuzhuang village in the Qinghai province, home to more than 15,000 Muslim ethnic Hui people.
Of the 31 people who were at the construction site at the moment of the collapse, four people were critically injured - one of them later died. 20 people suffered minor injuries.
"The child was an 8-year-old village boy who was playing around the construction site when the mosque suddenly collapsed," Xinhua quoted the local imam as saying.
Police have detained a building contractor, citing the failure of a supporting beam as a possible cause of the incident.
