"Viktor Baloga has named his complete disagreement with Viktor Yushchenko's decision to run for president for a second time the main reason for his resignation," the press service of Baloga's United Center party said.
The United Center party is believed to have been founded by Baloga to replace the pro-presidential Our Ukraine, which is reportedly on the verge of dissolution.
"I am convinced that you [Yushchenko] have no moral right to stand in the presidential elections. In any case, I will not be your associate in this," Baloga was also quoted as saying.
Yushchenko's approval rating is currently in single figures. Presidential elections will take place in late 2009-early 2010.
The president's former "Orange Revolution" ally, current Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, now his arch-rival, is likely to run against Yushchenko in the polls, whenever they eventually take place.
