Bronislaw Komorowski, the speaker of the Polish parliament, said he would announce the date for the early presidential election in two weeks after consultations with all political parties.
In line with the Polish constitution, Komorowski has assumed the presidential duties following the tragic death of President Lech Kaczynski in plane crash in west Russia on Saturday morning.
"My responsibility is to fix the date for the early presidential election in two weeks," Komorowski said.
According to the constitution, the early presidential election must be held within 60 days after the date is announced.
"I will announce the date after I hold consultations with all political parties," he added.
The Soviet-made Tu-154 carrying President Kaczynski hit the top of trees as it attempted to land at a Smolensk airport in west Russia at 10:50 a.m. (06:50 GMT) on Saturday. There were no survivors among 97 people on board of the plane.
Kaczynski's wife and a delegation of senior Polish officials, including the chief of the General Staff and the head of the national bank, were also on board.
