Two U.S. and one UK economist were awarded the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences on Monday for research on how policy affects unemployment.

The prize went to Peter Diamond of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dale Mortensen of Northwestern University, and Christopher Pissarides of the London School of Economics and Political Sciences.

Their research helps understand "the ways in which unemployment, job vacancies, and wages are affected by regulation and economic policy," the Nobel Committee said in a statement.
