The Sudanese army has regained control of Gereida, which was captured by rebels from the Sudan Liberation Army on Tuesday, according to government spokesman Ahmed al-Tayebas.

Al-Tayebas said on Thursday that the rebels were pushed back from the border area, but that mopping up operations continued around the town, 100 kilometers (60 miles) from Nyala, the capital of South Darfur.

The Sudan liberation Army destroyed telecommunications tower in Gereida, ransacked the local government and police buildings, and the market. Several residents were injured, and al-Tayebas added that nine soldiers were killed during the battle to regain the town.

About 300,000 people have been killed in Darfur, and 1.8 million have fled their homes since non-Arab rebels took up arms against the Arab-dominated Khartoum regime in 2003, according to UN statistics.
