Turkish Army Kills 14 Kurdish Rebels: Local Media

The Turkish army has killed 14 members of the outlawed Kurdish Workers’ Party (PKK) in an operation in the border zone with Iraq, local media reported on Friday.

ANKARA, November 9 (RIA Novosti) – The Turkish army has killed 14 members of the outlawed Kurdish Workers’ Party (PKK) in an operation in the border zone with Iraq, local media reported on Friday.

One serviceman died in the operation, which was launched after received a tip-off from a local resident about a build-up of separatist forces in the area, Turkey’s NTV reported.

The Turkish broadcaster NTV also reported that special forces, helicopter and aviation support were all involved in the operation.

The insurgency that the PKK launched more than 25 years ago is thought to have resulted in the deaths of over 40,000 people. The PKK is designated a terrorist organization by the United Nations and the European Union.
