WASHINGTON (Sputnik) – The US technology corporation Microsoft will lay off almost 2,000 people in an attempt to make its smartphone business more efficient, the company said in a press release on Wednesday.
"Microsoft Corp. on Wednesday announced plans to streamline the company’s smartphone hardware business, which will impact up to 1,850 jobs," the release stated.
The company will cut about 1,350 jobs in Finland and 500 jobs in other countries.
"As a result of the action, Microsoft will record a charge in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2016 for the impairment of assets in its More Personal Computing segment, related to these phone decisions," the release said.
The layoffs are expected to be fully completed by July 2017, according to Microsoft.
