Not a single country's healthcare system is ready for the coronavirus pandemic, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
"The healthcare system of no country in the world is ready for this pandemic. And any healthcare system will work in conditions of extreme overload. We have sad records - Italy, the US, Spain. No less disturbing statistics, but a calmer situation in Germany, where the healthcare system has shown great efficiency, so we will orient ourselves so that our healthcare system," Peskov said in a televised interview.
Peskov went on to say that Russia has all the prerequisites to more closely resemble Germany’s coronavirus response.
He added that hospitals in Moscow have been working 'extremely hard' amid the pandemic. However, about two more weeks are needed to see whether Russia is close to the peak of the outbreak, Peskov said.
Russia has confirmed more than 13,000 COVID-19 cases, with 106 deaths, according to the country's response centre.
According to the presidential spokesman, if Putin had not signed a decree on the isolation regime, the country could have seen a huge rise in the number of COVID-19 cases.
Mr Peskov said that Russia sympathises the United States over the current situation with coronavirus there. As of 11 April, the death toll from COVID-19 in the US stands at 18,777, while the total number of confirmed cases there has exceeded 501,000, Johns Hopkins University says.
