IN 2003 RUSSIAN RESCUERS CONDUCTED 11 OPERATIONS TO DELIVER HUMANITARIAN AID TO FOREIGN COUNTRIES

MOSCOW, January 6, 2003. (RIA Novosti correspondent Grigory Dubovitsky) -- In 2003 the Russian rescuers conducted 11 operations to deliver humanitarian aid to various countries of the world.

"During the past year the Russian Emergencies Ministry delivered to the CIS and far-abroad countries over US $7 million worth of foodstuffs, medicines, clothes and various equipment," Yury Brazhnikov, deputy head of the Emergencies Ministry of Russia, said on Tuesday.

According to him, the countries, which received aid from Russia, included Ethiopia and Eritrea, China, Iraq, Algeria, Ecuador, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Georgia.

Brazhnikov also noted that besides that, Russia also delivered humanitarian aid to Iran, which suffered from a devastating earthquake in late December 2003.

"So far two Emergencies Ministry's planes were sent to Iran with medicines, tents, heating devices and filters for water. The operation is to be continued and the volume of our aid will increase," the deputy minister said.
