The idea of renaming the street was first discussed two years ago but the city authorities needed the permission of the foreign ministry. Cairo advanced the renaming of the street as an obligatory condition for the revival of diplomatic relations between the two countries severed in 1980.
On October 6, 1981, Khaled al-Islambuli led a group of Egyptian officers from the Ikhwan al Muslimin (Moslem Brothers) radical movement who shot President Anwar Sadat during a military parade in Cairo. In their opinion, he betrayed the national interests of Arabs by signing the Camp David peace agreement with Israel (with the mediation of President Carter).
Al-Islambuli and several other officers were arrested, tried and executed. Seeking to immortalise the name of the fundamentalist leader, the Iranian authorities named a central street in Teheran after him.
