COUNCIL OF EUROPE DENOUNCES MOSCOW TERRORIST ATTACK

PARIS, February 6, 2004. /RIA Novosti/ - Heads of the Council of Europe have strongly denounced the act of terrorism committed in the Moscow subway on Friday morning.

The organization's Secretary General Walter Schwimmer, chairman of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe Peter Schieder, head of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe Herwig van Staa and Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Alvaro Gil-Robles made a joint declaration "denouncing the barbarous act and calling for putting an end to political violence".

The terrorist attack in the Moscow subway "just strengthens the determination of the Council of Europe to fight against terrorism", the statement emphasizes.

Heads of the Council of Europe offered their condolences to the relatives of the victims, Moscow citizens and Russian authorities.
