MOSCOW/TBILISI, February 8, 2004. (RIA Novosti) - Peacekeeping strongpoint No. 107 in the Georgian-Abkhaz conflict zone is shooting at the Kodori Gorge, PR of Emzar Kvitsiani, Georgia's presidential envoy to the problem-laden gorge, said to Novosti in Tbilisi. As they allege, machine guns and APCs opened fire this morning at about 11.40, Moscow time. Russian peacekeeping helicopters are reconnoitring the area, add our informants.
The peacekeeping command did not confirm the allegations, says Vyacheslav Sedov, Russia's Defence Ministry press service chief. "It's all calm there-no shooting at all," he said after getting in touch with the command on Novosti request.
Abkhazia is a self-proclaimed republic within Georgia.
