MOSCOW, February 18, 2004. (RIA Novosti) -- According to well-known Russian economist, director of the Europe Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Nikolai Shmelev, gas supplies to the CIS countries at reduced prices are a hangover of the Soviet times.

"The Russian gas should be sold at world prices on the Russian border," Shmelev told RIA Novosti commenting on the cessation of gas supplies to Belarus.

The supplies of cheap gas to the CIS countries are archaic and harmful and should be stopped, the economist said.
