ACTING RUSSIAN PREMIER KHRISTENKO WILL TAKE PART IN THE 9TH SESSION OF EURASEC INTERSTATE COUNCIL

ALMA-ATA, February 27, 2004. (RIA Novosti.) Acting prime minister of Russia Viktor Khristenko will take part in the 9th session of the Interstate Council of the Eurasian Economic Community (EurAsEC) which is due to be held on Friday, February 27, in Alma-Ata at the head-of-government level.

The agenda of the EurAsEC session includes 17 issues, such as the development of cooperation in the sphere of energy (including the use of hydroresources of Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan), the compiling of the Basic List of the Common Customs Tariff, the draft Treaty on the status of the Fundamentals of the EurAsEC legislation, the elaboration of the common stance at the negotiations on accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO), the draft Protocol on the terms of the transmission of electric energy among the Community's member-states, the Council on frontier issues, as well as the reports of the heads of government "On Economic situation of the EurAsEC member states and on the proposals on the problems of economic cooperation demanding joint tackling." As Grigory Rapota, the EurAsEC secretary general, recalled such meetings at the level of the heads of government the EurAsEC are held twice a year. The previous session of the EurAsEC Interstate Council took place in Moscow on October 28, 2003.

The Treaty on the creation of the interstate economic organization EurAsEC was signed on October 10, 2000, in Astana by the presidents of Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Tajikistan.

On May 31, 2001 in Minsk a package of fundamental documents was adopted which enabled the new Community to start functioning, At present three more CIS states -Armenia, Moldova, and Ukraine - enjoy the status of observers at the EurAsEC.
