The ad hoc group formed by the Venice Commission will consider the amendments at a special session March 13 and 14, the CE liaison office in Tbilisi has announced. Speaker of Georgian Parliament Nino Burjanadze is expected to attend the session.
The Venice Commission is also planning to assist Georgia's Central Electoral Committee in holding parliamentary polls. One of its experts, Bernard Owen, will provide the organizers with legal counseling on issues such as the registration of candidates, balloting, and vote count.
The European Commission for Democracy through Law was established in 1990, in the wake of the Berlin Wall's fall. This organization has been instrumental in bringing the constitutions of Eastern European nations in line with the standards of Western democracies. Its activity focuses on the following three areas: constitutional aid to specific countries, contrastive analysis of constitutional systems, and constitutional law.
