Police officers stopped a white Niva off-roader, which had no numberplates, for a routine document check at about 6.30 p.m. Moscow time. Armed men wearing camouflage uniforms were sitting inside of the car.
A Dagestani policeman ordered the men to show their documents; after that, one passenger took out a hand grenade, threatening to explode it, if the police didn't let them go. Dagestani policemen and the unknown people then fired at each other. One passenger was killed as a result; five others were injured and subsequently taken to hospital.
Those riding in the car, who came from Chechnya's Nozhai-Yurt district, were found to have ID cards of the republican presidential security service officers. The police confiscated one machine-gun, four assault rifles, one rifle, 24 filled assault-rifle magazines, a homemade underbarrel grenade launcher, a Beretta handgun, 10 different grenades and about 1,000 bullets.
The prosecutor's office is investigating this incident.
