THREE BANDITS KILLED IN INGUSHETIA

NAZRAN, MARCH 18, 2004, (RIA NOVOSTI) - Officers serving with the Federal Security Service's division and the Ingush republican interior ministry have killed three bandits, who were resisting arrest, a republican interior-ministry official told RIA Novosti here today. (Ingushetia is one of Russia's North Caucasian republics - Ed.).

In his words, a special operation aiming to detain members of unlawful paramilitary units was conducted in Nazran the other day.

A spetsnaz unit surrounded a house where the suspects were staying; meanwhile the latter fired automatic weapons, RIA Novosti's interlocutor said.

The spetsnaz officers returned the fire, killing three thugs as a result. One of them was subsequently identified.

The dead bandit's name is Musa Khashiyev, 26, from Ingushetia's Ordzhonikidzevskaya stanitsa (Cossack village). Khashiyev was wanted by the Sunzha district police department for murder and illegal arms sales. The other two dead men are currently being identified. No FSB operatives and policemen were hurt in the clash, the republican interior-ministry spokesman added.

FSB people and police officers found a Kalashnikov machine-gun, a Kalashnikov assault rifle, a Makarov handgun, as well as an F-1 grenade.

The authorities are investigating, the source noted in conclusion.
