I was very glad when Georgian Prime Minister Zurab Zhvania personally told me that agreement had been reached between the Georgian president and the Adzharian leader, says Schwimmer's declaration, circulated in Tbilisi by the Council of Europe Information Office.
The CE secretary general noted that he is very optimistic about the normal conduct of the parliamentary elections in Georgia on March 28.
Last week, when the situation was very tense, the Council of Europe invited the parties for a dialogue. After that I had frequent telephone conversations with my friends Mikhail Saakashvili and Aslan Abashidze for a peaceful outcome of the crisis, Schwimmer said.
During the talks, the CE secretary general again offered CE assistance for forming a real and efficient legal base for Georgia's autonomous regions.
The Council of Europe is satisfied to be able to contribute to settling the serious crisis in the country, which is a CE member. We will remain at the disposal of the Georgian government so as to continue joint work on the road of cooperation and dialogue, said Schwimmer.
