LONDON, March 22, 2004 (RIA Novosti) - The Russian National Orchestra has embarked on a tour of Britain.

The orchestra, which is led by Mikhail Pletnyov, within a week will tour Newcastle, Birmingham, Glasgow, Manchester and London, giving one concert in each city. The orchestra will perform music by Shostakovich, Prokofyev, Glinka, and Rachmaninov.

Moreover, on March 27, the musicians will give a concert at Windsor Castle, the long-time residence of the British royal family. It is the first such concert in the history of Russian music.

The Russian musicians will donate part of the receipts from the concert for the reconstruction of St George's Chapel, which was built in 1348 under King Edward III. The chapel, which is a medieval architecture monument, is also a memorial to the members of the royal family.

Members of the imperial and royal families of Europe and Asia, 24 Knights of the Garter, prominent patrons of the arts, public and political figures are expected to attend the concert at Windsor, which is located in an hour's drive from London.

The Russian National Orchestra and its Artistic Director, the famed pianist, conductor and composer Mikhail Pletnyov, who holds the title of Russian People's Artist, are known far beyond Russia.

The orchestra frequently goes on tours, giving concerts in the most prestigious concert halls of the world and accompanying world-renowned opera singers.
