MINSK, MARCH 26, 2004, RIA NOVOSTI - Russia would like CIS bodies to work more efficiently than they do now and to be more effective in meeting the member states' needs, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.

Speaking to the media after a session of the CIS Foreign Ministers Council in the Belarussian capital of Minsk on Friday, Lavrov said that many of the decisions made at the session were aimed at improving the life of "ordinary people." He said he was hopeful that the Council would come up with more such solutions, concrete and effective.

At its latest session in Minsk, the Foreign Ministers Council discussed a draft cooperation agreement on car theft and a draft resolution on the establishment of a CIS-wide agency and of a regional Central Asian operations group to combat drug trafficking. The new operations group is to report to the CIS Coordination Office for Organized Crime, whose staff will now be increased from 30 to 49. In addition, the Council considered a draft agreement on mutual recognition of high-school and vocational-school diplomas.
