It will be the sum of work to be done in 2004, said the administration of the Murmansk region. The total cost of the complex is estimated at 90 million euros.
Building work will begin this summer and end in the autumn of 2005.
The complex is planned to house 120 reactor units and can be further enlarged. The reactor units will be kept inside the overland bunker during 50 to 70 years to be remelted afterwards. Similar technologies exist in world practice.
The need of building an overland storage is dictated by this: according to the present utilisation technology of nuclear submarines, the reactors with offloaded fuel are kept afloat in the Saida-Guba, creating problems with radiation and environmental safety. Now, about 50 nuclear reactors are being kept afloat.
The overland complex for keeping reactor units is under construction in line with the agreement between the Russian Nuclear Power Industry Ministry and the German Economic and Labour Ministry. It was signed last November in St.Petersburg within the Global Partnership programme, the Murmansk administration said.
