RUSSIAN SENATE SPEAKER IN BRAZIL, MEETS PARLIAMENT TOP

RIO DE JANEIRO, APRIL 1, RIA NOVOSTI - Speaker Sergei Mironov of the Federation Council, Russia's upper parliamentary house, is paying an official visit to Brazil. He met at the negotiation table today with top members of the host country's National Congress-Jose Sarney and Joao Cuna, respective presidents of the Federal Senate and the Chamber of Deputies.

As he commented the talks, Mr. Mironov highlighted Russia's strategic interest in contacts with Latin America, in particular, Brazil.

The Russian and Brazilian parliamentary routine has much in common, especially where information coverage is concerned, he said proceeding from a firsthand view of Brazilian parliament formation patterns, and the organisation of its activities.

The visitor found Brazilian experience of great interest, and deserving detailed studies in certain fields, work with the country's particular parts among them.

Sergei Mironov's contacts in Brazil concerned prospects for a tender as the Brazilian Air Force intends to purchase fighter jets. Rosoboronexport Co., Russia's leading arms exporter, is contesting to offer SU-35s, of Russian design and manufacture. Brazil has a high opinion of the craft, and its experts think Russia has a good chance in the contest, said the Senator.
