ARMED DRUG SMUGGLER KILLED AT AFGHAN-TAJIKISTANI BORDER.

DYUSHAMBE, April 7, 2004 (RIA Novosti) - An armed drug smuggler was killed and more than 150 kilograms of drugs were confiscated at the Tajikistan-Afghanistan border, the press service of the Russian frontier group in Tajikistan reported on Wednesday.

Yesterday, in the Moscow frontier detachment's section of the border (180 kilometers southeast of Dushanbe), Russian frontier guards and the Tajikistani Interior Ministry department for combating illegal drug trafficking conducted a joint operation to stop a large amount of drugs from being smuggled from Afghanistan to Tajikistan.

An armed group of up to five drug smugglers from Afghanistan tried to cross the Tajikistani border. During the arrest, the smugglers fired at the Russian frontier guards. One of the smugglers was killed in the skirmish, the others left their cargo and disappeared into Afghanistan.

While investigating the location of the incident, the frontier guards found and confiscated 144.1 kilograms of heroin and 13.2 kilograms of raw opium.

During the operation, the organizer of the drug deal, a Tajikistani citizen was arrested. The Russian frontier guards handed him over to the Tajikistani Interior Ministry, the press service reported.
