MOSCOW, April 17 (RIA Novosti) - Operation "Illegal Immigrant" carried out by the police has allowed law-enforcers to prevent over 2,000 crimes related to illegal immigration, Deputy Interior Minister Alexander Chekalin told journalists on Saturday.

He reminded the audience that the operation took place from March 20 to 30.

"The beginning of spring is accompanied by massive influx of foreign workers into Russia. The measures we took to ensure legitimacy of these people's entry and stay in the country allowed us to prevent 2,220 punishable offenses," Chekalin pointed out.

The Deputy Interior Minister specified that the law-enforcers had prevented 1,014 attempts to use forged documents, 198 cases of property damage related to employment of illegal immigrants, 122 cases of fraud, 88 cases of illegal enterprise, and 15 cases of bribery.

"In the course of the operation, law-enforcers examined activities of more that 90,000 companies employing foreign workers. Most of these businesses operate in retail trade, the services sector, industrial production, construction and agriculture," the Deputy Minister pointed out.

He said that the operation also helped to prevent about 369,000 administrative offenses, including nearly 140,000 violations of the existing passport and visa regulations.

"The investigative materials related to the violations revealed in the course of the operation were submitted to appropriate courts. With due account of the gravity of offense, the latter passed decisions on deportation of 8,785 foreign citizens," Alexander Chekalin said.

The Deputy Interior Minister stressed that the recent measures to enhance administrative and border-crossing control in the country entailed "increased influx of illegal immigrants under the guise of foreign tourists." "This trend is particularly prominent in Siberia and the Far East," Alexander Chekalin said.

He pointed out that the country's immigration authorities do not pursue the policy of undertaking punitive actions in relation to illegal immigrants. Our aim is to identify such individuals and make them comply with Russia's immigration laws," Alexader Chekalin pointed out.
