SHANGHAI SIX GETTING STRONGER

MOSCOW, April 23 (RIA Novosti) - The current international situation is extremely involved, and rapidly changing. Ever new threats and challenges are coming up. The Shanghai Six must build up their partnership against the challenges, said Sergei Lavrov, Russia's Foreign Minister. He was addressing a foreign-ministerial conference of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation-China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

The organisation is to establish a well-knit system of repulsing new threats in its territory, and promote the strengthening of the international anti-terror coalition under the United Nations aegis.

As its partnership with the UN Security Council Counterterrorist Committee and other international anti-terror bodies makes progress, the organisation has every chance to develop into a dynamic and essential coalition member.

The terror danger has more manifestations with every passing day. Prospects have come up for nuclear, biological, computer and chemical terrorism. No one any longer puts to doubt a close link between terrorism and drug traffic, pointed out Mr. Lavrov.

It takes not mere force but political, social, economic and humanitarian efforts to respond to latter-day challenges. The Shanghai Six must together promote joint progress in their territory, build up confidence, and display the utmost consideration for each other's national cultures and traditions. Resolutions of last September's prime-ministerial conference posed al those targets.

The minister warned against an anxiety to adopt as many documents as possible, and called to launch essential projects that would meet all the six countries' interests.

Russia regards Shanghai Cooperation consolidation and enhancing its role among top long-term priorities, while the world has recognised the Shanghai Six as a geopolitical reality, and importsnt positive factor of regional and global politics, stressed Mr. Lavrov.

The organisation will do ever more for regional and global stability, security and development as it is working to implement available understandings. Of that he is sure.

Today's Moscow session analysed compliance with decisions of the latest Prime-Ministerial Council session (Moscow, May 2003), and took stock of preparations for the next organisation summitry, due in Tashkent, June.
