RUSSIA REITERATES ITS COMMITMENT TO PROMOTING CYPRUS REUNIFICATION

MOSCOW, April 28 (RIA Novosti) - Russia remains committed to working with the Greek and the Turkish Cypriots toward the reunification of Cyprus in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions, Alexander Yakovenko, official spokesman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, says in a statement.

Many of the statements and comments made in the wake of the April 24 referendum in Cyprus point out the need to provide economic aid for the island's Turkish community in reward for their "yes" vote. The Russian government welcomes the idea, hoping that better living standards in Cyprus' northern part, populated by Turks, will help overcome the wealth gap between the two communities, Yakovenko said.

"This could become a favorable background for achieving a viable and fair settlement in Cyprus in case practical steps in this direction will be taken along the lines of the UN resolutions on Cyprus," Yakovenko said.

Special mechanisms to implement these plans should be created under the UN auspices, he added.
