ABASHIDZE LEFT ADZHARIA TO PREVENT BLOODSHED, SAYS THE SOURCE AT RUSSIAN SECURITY COUNCIL

MOSCOW, May 6 (RIA Novosti). Former leader of Adzharia (the Georgian autonomous republic) decided to leave Adzharia for Moscow to prevent bloodshed, a source at the Russian Security Council told RIA Novosti.

"In the early hours of May 6, while consultations with Secretary of the Russian Security Council Igor Ivanov were held in the residence of the head of Adzharia, a mass uncontrolled firing began in the street. Reports came that a considerable contingent of the Georgian special task forces moves to Batumi, the capital of Adzharia," the source said.

"In this critical situation leader of Adzharia Abashidze, after consultations with the autonomy's leaders, decided to leave Georgia to prevent a bloodshed which could lead to numerous victims. He flew to Moscow by the Russian special flight together with Igor Ivanov, the RIA interlocutor pointed out.

He also stressed that on Wednesday Russian president Vladimir Putin, on the initiative of the Georgian side, sent Russian Security Council Secretary Igor Ivanov to Georgia to conduct consultations on the settlement of the crisis situation in Adzharia.
