ASIAN-PACIFIC UNIVERSITIES PRESIDENTS MEET IN VLADIVOSTOK

VLADIVOSTOK, May 19 (RIA Novosti) - The ninth conference of presidents of Asian-Pacific universities opened in Vladivostok on Wednesday. Heads of Russian, Japanese, Chinese, North Korean, South Korean, American, Malaysian, Canadian and other Asian-Pacific countries' universities and research centers are attending the conference, a spokesman for the Russian Far East State University, the organizer of the conference, told RIA Novosti Wednesday.

The theme of the conference is, "The Role of Universities in the Dialogue of Countries in the Asia-Pacific Region." During the conference, sessions on topics like, "New Perspectives of Joint Educational Projects," and "A Regional Dialogue for Solving the Issues of Environmental Protection," will be held.

The conference will end on May 20.

The foreign conference participants include Tatsuro Matsumae, the president of the Tokay University, Japan; Sanusi Junid, the president of the Malaysian International Islamic University; and Joyce S. Tsunoda, vice president of the University of Hawaii.

Russia is represented by rectors of higher educational institutions, experts, specialists in the sphere of the development of education and Asia-Pacific problems, including rector of the Far East State University Vladimir Kurilov, president of the Moscow Academy of Educational Development and Culture Yury Gromyko.

The first conference of presidents from Asian-Pacific universities was held in Tokyo in 1987. Since then, the conference has been held regularly every two years. The participants discuss the role of universities in maintaining peace and stability in the region, cooperation in education and science, the use of information technologies and environmental protection.
