VILNIUS, May 19 (RIA Novosti) - The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe is going to check the level of environmental friendliness of the oil field Kravtsovskoe (D-6) in the Baltic sea near the Courland spit, Lithuania's National Radio said on Wednesday.

PACE is interested to know whether the oil field operation can harm the environment.

The PACE delegation, now in Lithuania, jointly with representatives of Lithuania and Kaliningrad (Russia's exclave in the Baltic) is considering possible effects of service of the Russian oil platform on the environment.

The reserve zone Courland spit is a narrow strip of sand from 350 metres to four kilometres wide and 92 kilometres long. It separates the Courland gulf from the Baltic sea.

The D-6 oil well belongs to the Russian company Lukoil. By the end of 2005 the D-6 is planned to produce about 600,000 tonnes of oil. Its operation may last from 25 to 30 years.

The Kravtsovskoe (D-6) oil field, the largest in the Kaliningrad region, was discovered in 1983.
