MOSCOW, May 30 - RIA Novosti. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov discussed with U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell the process of political settlement in Iraq over the telephone on Saturday, the Sunday's statement of the Information and Media Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry reads.

"Cooperation within the UN Security Council to provide efficient support of normalization in Iraq on the part of the international community was also on the agenda," the statement reads.

On Sunday Lavrov had another telephone conversation with UN secretary General's Special Representative Lahdar Brahimi, in which they discussed the formation of an interim government of Iraq.

The Information and Media Department of the Foreign Ministry told RIA Novosti that Mr. Brahimi had spoken with Mr. Lavrov about progress of his mission on the formation of an interim government that is to take over from the Coalition Provisional Authority on June 30.

On Russia's part, the minister emphasized that it was very important for an Iraq interim government to enjoy support inside the country and be internationally legitimate.

"On this condition the UN Security Council could embrace transfer of power to the Iraqis and adopt a resolution to that effect," the Russian Foreign ministry said.
