MOSCOW, JUNE 1 (RIA Novosti) - Russia is for holding a meeting between members of the United Nations Security Council with the Interim Governing Council of Iraq, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Yuri Fedotov has said on Tuesday. He was commenting on the situation in Iraq, the Press and Information Board of the Russian Foreign Ministry told RIA Novosti.

"It would be important to let the Security Council meet with the Interim Council and learn about its considerations on the further settlement and the involvement of the international community", Fedotov said.

"In this case, we can be sure that we are acting as willed by the Iraqis, not contrary to their will", he added.

Fedotov recalled that Russia stands for "the people of Iraq to decide their future in the democratic and civilised way, be able in full measure to be in charge of their natural resources, live in peace with their neighbours".

Russia also thinks it possible to convene an Iraq conference before June 30, when power is to be passed to the Interim Governing Council.

"The idea of the international conference on Iraq with the involvement of all its political forces, neighbour states and members of the UN Security Council targets the ensurance of the required domestic and international legitimacy for the Iraqi Interim Council", Fedotov said.

"The forum could be convened before June 30", he specified.

According to the Russian diplomat, the conference idea could come in useful during the process of Iraqi settlement, which is in need of efficient international support.
