RUSSIA'S CELLULAR SUBSCRIBERS' NUMBER GETS CLOSE ON 50 MILLION

MOSCOW, June 4 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's number of mobile phone users increased by 2,470,000 to 46,890,000 in May.

The level of cellular communication presence in Russia stands at 32.3 percent in comparison with 30.6 percent a month ago, the ACM-Consulting research company reports.

In Moscow last month, 344,696 subscribers joined in the mobile phone networks, bringing up the number of Moscow users to 13,138,000. The presence in the Moscow region is 77.4 percent (75.4 percent in April).

In St.Petersburg on results of May, the number of users of cellular communication was 4,243,854, meaning that 179,683 users joined in during the month. The presence there reached 66.9 percent against 64.1 percent in April.

In May the MTS (Mobile TeleSystems) increased the number of its subscribers by 1.2 million, slightly over 244,000 in Moscow. The total of the company's subscribers reached 22.2 million.

The subscriber base of Vympelkom (Bee Line trademark) increased by 908,000 to 15.05 million; in Moscow it was joined by 90,000 people.

Russia's third largest cellular operator Megafon serviced 8,592,155 users as of late May, adding 458,193 during the month. In Moscow, the number of Megafon users stands at 1,012,560, complemented by 10,200 during the month.

According to ACM-Consulting, on the national list of the biggest cellular operators are also Uralsvyazinform (1,457,600 users as of the end of May), SMARTS (1,346,000), Sibirtelecom (662,800).
