SIBERIAN DOCTORS READY TO TEST AIDS VACCINES ON MAN

NOVOSIBIRSK, June 22 (RIA Novosti's Maxim Koshmarchuk) - Two AIDS vaccines are ready for clinical tests on man, Larissa Karpenko said to Novosti. She heads the recombinant vaccine laboratory at the Vector, Novosibirsk-based State Research Centre for Virusology and Biotechnologies.

The genetic-engineering vaccines made a fine show when tested on apes as they induced antibodies destroying HIV-infected cells. The team hopes the effect on man will be similar.

These hopes are rather vague, however, acknowledged Miss Karpenko, what with a major difference between ape's and human HIVs.

The Vector is ready with several kinds of AIDS vaccines, but deems only two of these suited for man.

The State Standardisation and Control Institute under the federal Health Ministry is testing vaccine samples. It will determine whether to authorise tests on man.

"Inspection institute experts have certain grudges against our vaccines, and we are working to remove all drawbacks they have found," our interviewee went on.

More than thirty HIV vaccine types are being developed the world over. Previous tests on man were not hopeful in other countries. Russian vaccines have never before come up for clinical tests on man.
