KHMELEVKA (Kaliningrad region), June 23 (RIA Novosti) - The Russian, Polish and Lithuanian rescuers were engaged in the practical phase of the Kaliningrad-2004 exercise on extinguishing a conventional fire on the oil derrick and gathering oil in the Baltic Sea on Wednesday.

The exercise also involved units of the Russian Defense Ministry, Transport Ministry, Environment Ministry and other services.

Under the exercise scenario, 'terrorists' took hostages on the LUKoil derrick seven miles offshore. The two-day negotiations with them ended in failure and were followed by the assault of the oil derrick by the marine special units and divers.

Nevertheless, the 'terrorists' managed to blow up the oil platform, which resulted in substantial oil spill and catastrophic fire on the platform.

Besides, several 'LUKoil employees' were injured. The Emergencies Ministry's helicopters carrying rescuers were dispatched to provide medical assistance to the 'wounded'.

Shown during the fire-fighting were the capabilities of the Be-200 amphibious aircraft, which had already entered the Emergencies Ministry's inventory. The aircraft hit water, took in 12 tons of water, then took off and extinguished the fire on the platform.

Simultaneously, numerous fire brigades and rescuers were gathering oil at the shore and treating water and sand.

The Kaliningrad-2004 exercise is held within the framework of Russia-NATO Council, involving observers from 22 countries, including NATO states, along with the Russian, Polish and Lithuanian experts and rescuers. The exercise began yesterday and will end on June 25.

The LUKoil develops an oil field on the shelf of the Kurshk Spit (in the Baltic Sea) bordering on Lithuania.
