THE HAGUE, June 26 (RIA Novosti) - Russian and Dutch scholars held a seminar in the Hague yesterday discussing measures to reduce vulnerability to terrorist attacks.

Scholars from Russia's Academy of Sciences (RAN), a series of research institutes, Dutch scholars and defense ministry, interior ministry, transport ministry, and fire service officials took part in the seminar.

The participants focused on intermediary results of the joint project funded by the Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research (TNO), RAN, and the Russian Fund of Fundamental Research.

Nikolai Plate, RAN Vice-President who is leading the Russian delegation, told RIA Novosti that the project was designed to look into ways to reduce risks in the events of terrorist attacks on skyscrapers.

"Such an analysis directly refers to fundamental science. Over a dozen reports delivered by Russian and Dutch scholars at the seminar show that the analysis of past terrorist acts and man-caused catastrophes allows to forecast flame and blast wave spread, stress in structures, and people's behavior under different circumstances," said Mr. Plate.

Relevant assessments can be applied in building skyscrapers, as well as to deter and bring down the negative emergency aftermath to a minimum.

Such data is of immense importance for analyzing possibilities of preventing terrorist acts and bringing damages to a minimum. The scientific approach can also be taken in dealing with natural and man-made catastrophes.

Mr. Plate gave a high assessment to the seminar's results saying they demonstrated Dutch and Russian scholars' cooperativeness.

Denni Hoffmans, the Dutch co-chairman of the project, is also pleased with the seminar results and scientific cooperation. He urged the further development of Russian-Dutch cooperation in the research sphere.
