LITHUANIA HOLDS RUNOFF PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION ON SUNDAY

VILNIUS, June 27 (RIA Novosti) -- Lithuania is holding a runoff presidential election on Sunday, with two most successful candidates from the first round competing for presidency. In this election American ecologist and former president Valdas Adamkus, who collected 30.18% of the vote faces first Lithuanian prime minister Dr. Kasimira Danute Prunskiene who collected 20.6%.

Lithuania has 2,655,309 registered voters who will cast votes from 7 a.m. till 8 p.m. at 2,038 polling stations.

The voters, who are ill or for other reasons cannot vote on Sunday, have voted via mail or at home, and Lithuania's diplomatic representatives abroad have also cast their votes in advance. According to Lithuania's Main Elections Commission, 166,000 voters opted to vote in advance, which accounts for 6.3% of the registered voters.

In the first round, 174,000 people had voted in advance, which constituted 6.3% of the registered voters. Although there were so many of them, as few as 48.4% of the population came to the polls on June 13.

Lithuania is holding an extraordinary presidential election following impeachment and removal of president Rolandas Paksas on April 6 for major violation of the constitution and oath of office. He was accused of illegally using foreign sponsorship in electioneering.
