RUSSIAN FOREIGN MINISTRY DENOUNCES NATO CONSTRUCTION IN BALTIC STATES

ISTANBUL, June 28 (RIA Novosti) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has sharply criticized construction of NATO military infrastructure in the Baltic states.

When speaking at the Russia-NATO Council's session in Istanbul, the minister emphasized that "unfortunately, in the most stable European region, the Baltic states, where due to unprecedented arms reduction the real military threats have been practically excluded, construction is ongoing today of military infrastructure, and aerodromes and ports are being modernized."

This happens without any consultations with the Russian party and without any explanations, he pointed out.

"This suggests only one thing: NATO still relies more on internal instructions for protection of its members than on real joint assessments of the security state in this or other region," Lavrov underlined.

It is very important that the Agreement on Adaptation of the Conventional Forces in Europe Treaty should come into force as soon as possible, he added. Russia ratified the agreement on June 25, the minister recalled.
