MARIA SHARAPOVA WON WIMBLEDON TITLE

LONDON, July 4 - RIA Novosti. New Wimbledon title winner Maria Sharapova, 17, told a news conference after the final match versus first seeded American Serena Williams she would buy herself a luxurious car for the prize money.

Sharapova has become the first Russian female to ever win the UK title - the oldest Grand Slam tournament (the most successful Soviet Olga Morozova was defeated by American Chris Evert in 1974). The 1st prize is worth 560,500 British pounds (1 million U.S. dollars).

"When I qualify for a driver's license, I will buy a car, a Porsche Cayenne," Sharapova said. Currently her license has a parental restriction but early next year she expects to qualify for self-sustained driving.

In response to question from RIA Novosti whether she wished to spend part of the money on charity, she said: "I got such a plan on my mind."

Sharapova named first Russian president and tennis-lover Boris Yeltsin, Belarus-based granny, and friend Maria Kirilenko as the first to have congratulated her as she won.

Admitting that she had no priorities as to which Grand Slam trophies were most important for her, she said she "would like to win the entire Grand Slam," for there is a "sufficient reserve."

"I'd like to build up my physical condition," said Sharapova, currently No 15 on the WTA list.

She emphasized Wimbledon was her favorite tournament. "I always wanted to win it but did not expect I could win so early," she said.

On the court she always thinks in Russian, although since her early childhood has been trained and living in the U.S., Sharapova told reporters.

Sharapova's win, as well as Anastasia Myskina's title at this year's French Open, has aroused a sweeping wave of patriotism in Russia.

As Anna Kournikova emerged in WTA high ranks several years ago, many believed she would lead Russian tennis women. However, Kournikova failed so far to win any major tournament but became a commercial brand. She is always at the top of celebrity news in yellow press and has recently sued her parents for promotion money.

Kournikova seems to have forgotten her country and cannot speak her mother tongue without an American accent, which most hopefully will not be the case with Maria Sharapova, though she also spends most of her time in the U.S.
