MOSCOW, July 7 (RIA Novosti) - The initiation of a criminal case against Aslan Abashidze is contrary to the security guarantees provided at the top level, the Russian Foreign Ministry has said.

Commenting on the media reports regarding the initiation of a criminal case against the ex-head of Adzharia (Georgia' autonomy), the Press and Information Board of the Russian Foreign Ministry said: "All this is done in contravention of the guarantees of security and non-persecution given at the top level".

"Now, officials of different calibre maintain that these guarantees are null and void", the Foreign Ministry noted.

"Leaving on the conscience of some Tbilisi officials the undue treatment of promises given at the top level, it is to be asked what price the assurances of Georgian politicians and what else is to be expected from them", the ministerial commentary reads.

The Russian Foreign Ministry recalled that in the end of June Abashidze's daughter was detained and placed in house arrest. She was in Batumi to honour her mother's death anniversary. "Now, it is the criminal persecution of the ex-head of Adzharia and the seizure of his property", the commentary goes on to read.

On Tuesday Georgian Prosecutor General Zurab Zhvania told reporters in Tbilisi that a criminal case has been begun against the former leader of the Adzharian autonomy.
