MOSCOW, July 15 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's national trunk operator Rostelecom and China Telecom signed an agreement on building a cable communications system between Russia and China, says Rostelecom's press-release.

The agreement was signed on Thursday in China Telecom's central office in Beijing. The ceremony was attended by China's deputy information industry minister Gohua Si, Rostelecom's director general Dmitri Yerokhin and China Telecom's president Detsyan Chzhou.

"Concluding the agreement on building the cable communications system between Russia and China, we make a next step in integrating our countries' communications networks into the world telecommunications space", the press-release quotes Mr. Yerokhin as saying.

"Signing of the agreement goes in line with the Russian-Chinese intergovernmental commission's decision and we thank China's Information Industry Ministry and Russia's Information Technologies and Communications Ministry for backing our mutually beneficial cooperation with China Telecom", he pointed out.

According to Mr. Yerokhin, construction of the new cable system between the two countries will enable the companies to operate more successfully on the international market offering services of high-speed through-connection between Europe and Asia featuring the new quality level.

"The quality is ensured by our networks' high organizational level and Russia and China's geographical position providing the shortest traffic exchange route between European and Asian countries. Besides, by establishing direct connection of China Telecom and Rostelecom's networks our companies will widen their capabilities in intensive introduction of modern technologies and strengthening cooperation in various areas of telecommunications", said Mr. Yerokhin.

The cable system's planned bandwidth is 2.5 Gb/s providing for further expansion to 300 Gb/s.
