Cargo transit to the Russian enclave on the Baltic Coast is high on the EU-Russia agenda now, Yastrzhembsky said, adding that active negotiations on the issue will get underway this autumn. In his words, no one is trying to put hurdles in the way of a settlement; it's just that many civil servants are on vacation now, and will not get back to their offices until autumn.
Yastrzhembsky highlighted the importance of settling such related issues as phyto-sanitary and veterinary control on Lithuanian border checkpoints. All of Lithuania's veterinary control points have now been removed as falling short of EU standards, which is why veterinary cargoes have to be delivered to Kaliningrad via Poland, the presidential aide said. To get the problem resolved, Russia will have to hold consultations not just with Vilnius, but with Brussels, as well, he added.
