The Kremlin press service reported that the federal law "On amending Articles 57 and 205 of the Russian Criminal Code" was adopted by the State Duma on June 25, 2004 and approved by the Federation Council on July 7, 2004.
In accordance with the amendments to Article 57 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, life imprisonment is not used as an alternative to death penalty, but for committing capital offence, threatening life, and for capital offences against public security.
Simultaneously, the Federal Law provides for life imprisonment for terrorism committed by an organized group or entailing through negligence death or other grave consequences, equally associated with threatening nuclear power facilities or use of nuclear materials, radioactive substances or radiation sources.
The term of imprisonment for other acts of terrorism is also increased.
