TBILISI, July 31 (RIA Novosti's Marina Kvaratskhelia) - Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili ordered not to open fire in the Georgian-South Ossetian conflict area at a special session with power structures yesterday.

"The President ordered to avoid armed clashes and not to open fire in case of armed provocation," chief of the Georgian general staff Givi Iukuridze told journalists following the session.

According to him, "Georgian units should stay calm and not to aggravate tensions".

Meanwhile, "a meeting with South Ossetian leader Eduard Kokoity may be held in Tskhinvali (capital of South Ossetia, a self-proclaimed republic in Georgia)", said Georgian State Minister for Separatist Conflicts Georgy Khaindrava.

The U.S. is ready to help the political settlement of the Georgian-Ossetian conflict. U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Elizabeth Jones said on Friday after the meeting with President Mikhail Saakashvili.

The U.S. comes out for Georgia's territorial integrity and sovereignty, she noted. All conflicts in Georgian territory need peaceful settlement, Ms. Jones added.

According to her, the U.S. assigns priority to President Saakashvili's readiness for peaceful settlement and is interested in it, as well.

After her short visit to Tbilisi, Elizabeth Jones flew to Warsaw.
