The regional administration told RIA Novosti that the Japanese delegation was being led by Hokkaido Vice-Governor Shinji Asada and Hiramitsu Sugano, co-chairman of the Sakhalin-Hokkaido friendship society.
On Monday, the Japanese delegates are expected to study the way vacations for children are arranged on Sakhalin, look into the state of agricultural farms and the construction of the world's largest and Russia's first ever plant for liquefying natural gas.
An official meeting of the representatives of twin cities will take place at Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk's Sakhintsentr international business centre on Tuesday, August 3. They will discuss the further development of friendly ties.
Such meetings have already become a kind of tradition as they have been regularly held in the two border areas separated by La Perouse Strait. Twelve cities on Sakhalin have twin cities in Hokkaido, Japan's northern most island. Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk has as many as three twin cities in Hokkaido - Asahikawa, Hakodate, and Wakkanai. The latter is also the twin city of Sakhalin's port of Korsakov.
