MOSCOW, August 2 (RIA Novosti) - The 126th regiment of Interior Troops has begun fulfilling its objectives in Ingushetia (a North Caucasus republic neighboring Chechnya), Russian Interior Minister Rashid Nurgaliyev said at a meeting between President Vladimir Putin and the cabinet on Monday.

In his words, the main goal is to maintain public order and security and address urgent issues.

"Interaction is maintained with the 503rd regiment of the Defense Ministry, the border unit of the Federal Security Service [FSB] and Ingushetia's Interior Ministry," added Mr. Nurgaliyev.

"The essential problems of accommodation, location and service have been solved," he said. "They can fulfill the set tasks."

Mr. Nurgaliyev also said that the regiment had been fully equipped with weapons. "Hardware will be delivered to the location separately," he said.

The decision to deploy an interior regiment in Ingushetia was made in the wake of the terrorist attack on June 22. Seventy-nine people were killed in the attack, including 43 law enforcement officers, and over 100 people were wounded.

When the president asked him to describe the work of the Chechen Interior Ministry, Mr. Nurgaliyev said: "In the past few months, we have seen the Chechen Interior Ministry work seriously and efficiently."

He also said that serious crimes had been solved along with some economic offenses, and added that efforts were made to track down an underground organization in Chechnya and Ingushetia.

When Mr. Putin asked him about the work of the public commission to restore Chechnya, Mr. Nurgaliyev said: "We are controlling everything linked to damage payments and housing restoration."

The Russian president asked Mr. Nurgaliyev to thank the people who prevented militants from attacking Kizlyar (a town in Dagestan, North Caucasus republic bordering on Chechnya).

"We should thank all the Interior Ministry staff members who prevented militants' attack in Kizlyar [a town in Dagestan, North Caucasus republic bordering on Chechnya]," Mr. Putin said, "and take care of the families of the dead personnel."

"If you need anything from the government, you just state it," added the president.

On Friday, July 30, unidentified criminals opened fire at policemen who attempted to check a house in Kizlyar.

The local interior minister said earlier that the bandits were members of the so-called "Nogai-batallion," whose militants are hiding in the Shelkovskoi district of Chechnya. The criminals arrived in Kizlyar to commit terrorist attacks, the minister said.

The operation was conducted by the joint forces of the Dagestani Interior Ministry and the local FSB department. FSB servicemen armed with light armor stormed an apartment on Pobedy Street where the bandits had barricaded themselves.

During the special operation, three militants were killed and their female associate was detained.

According to earlier reports, two policemen were killed in the fire exchange.
