BAGHDAD, AUGUST 7 (RIA Novosti) - A source in the Special Tribunal for Crimes of the Saddam Hussain Regime has called rumour the reports that an arrest warrant has allegedly been issued in Iraq for the arrest of its chairman Salem Chalabi.

On Friday sources in the Saddam Hussain Protection Committee said that Chalabi is accused of corruption and appropriation of a big sum of money. According to unconfirmed information, he has got the money from Kuwait.

The rumour and accusations with respect to the administrative director of the Special Tribunal are attempts to cast aspersions on the reputation of Salem Chalabi as a lawyer and undermine the esteem for the Special Tribunal among Iraqis and abroad, a member of the Special Tribunal preferring to remainunnamed told RIA Novosti.

Media accusations against Salem Chalabi are meant to discredit the tribunal.

The information carried by The Los Angeles Times three days ago on Cahalabi's involvement in the assassination of an official of the Iraqi Finance Ministry is "false from the beginning to end", the source said.

The American newspaper said that several weeks ago Chalabi killed a ministerial department head who examined facts of misappropriation of state finance by the leadership of the Iraqi National Congress party, led by his uncle Ahmad Chalabi.

Thus, the American newspaper unambiguously accused Chalabi of active involvement in the dirty doings of his relative.

The source rejected Chalabi's participation in whatever activities of the Iraqi National Congress.

/The INC was conceived in 1992 as a force to unite the heterogeneous opposition. The Congress is declared to express "the true will" of the people of Iraq and represents all the groups of the population - Sunnies, Shiites, Kurds, Christians and other ethnic minorities. The INC leader Dr.Ahmad Chalabi comes from a rich Shiite family, leaving Iraq after overthrowing of monarchy in 1958, was educated in the United States. After being accused of financial machinations ten years ago, left Jordan for the West.

The sources stressed that the statement prepared by the Special Tribunal, to be published on Saturday, notes that "Salem Chalabi is well-known among Iraqi and foreign lawyers for his honesty and decency".

"In connection with the continuing inventions and slander in the address of members of the Special Tribunal they are entitled to protect their honour and dignity, sue their authors and those, including the mass media, who spread the lies intentionally", the spokesman for the Special Tribunal said.
