MOSCOW, August 14 (RIA Novosti's Olga Lipich) - Russia is going to take part in the first international Moslem foods show, to feature foodstuffs that adherents of Islam are allowed to consume by the Sharia' law. Moslems refer to such foods as Halal.

The show will be running August 14 through 18 in the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur, officials at Russia's Mufti Council have told RIA Novosti. The Council coordinates Halal food production in Moscow and the rest of Russia, issuing certificates to producers of "lawful" Islamic foods.

Rushan-hazrat Abbyasov, head of the Mufti Council's foreign department, who will be personally attending the Kuala Lumpur show, has lamented that Russian food producers did not seem to have much interest in this large international trade forum. Out of the over 80 participating companies, only one comes from Russia, he notes.

Small wonder, then, that Halal producers from Latin America and Europe will continue to hold lion's shares at the Kuala Lumpur fair and, consequently, on the Russian market as well, with Russian counterparts remaining on the sidelines, points out Mr. Abbyasov. In his view, strengthening spiritual ties between Russia's Moslem community and Moslems in the outside world is of paramount importance, but relations in other spheres of life should not be overlooked.
