MOSCOW, August 20 (RIA Novosti) - Participants of the consultations of representatives of the Collective Security Treaty Organization member states (Russia, Belarus, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan) on foreign policy and security have compared their positions on the key issues.

The CSTO Secretariat's press service said "an extensive exchange of opinions on the main items of the agenda of the UN General Assembly 59th session took place; the positions of the CSTO member states in regard to the Security Initiative in the fight against WMD proliferation and a common attitude of the member states on the main trends of the OSCE activity were considered."

"The consultations' participants emphasized the central role of the UN and its Security Council as the main mechanism of supporting peace and international security, noted the growing topicality of a regular coordination of positions on the key issues touching upon the interests and security of the CSTO member states," said the press service. Consultations were led by CSTO deputy Secretary General Toktasyn Buzubayev.

Russia joined the Proliferation Security Initiative of May 31, 2004, which was advanced by U.S. President George Bush in May 2003. 60 states voiced their support of the initiative in this or that way.

The initiative was aimed at detecting, preventing and stopping illegal turnover and transborder movement of WMD-related materials and delivery means, as well as countering the black market of these materials.
