"Bodies of eight militants have been discovered in the bushes and high grass of derelict backyards," the HQ reports. Medical examination has shown that the bandits had died of wounds and blood loss.
Moreover, search operations have helped discover seven underground militants in the basements of three abandoned houses. "They all have wounds of various gravity, with five of them being in a grave condition," the report says.
According to the regional HQ, a lot of ammunition and weapons were discovered in these basements. The federal forces found 31 submachine-guns, over 6,000 cartridges, three homemade explosive devices each containing 400 grams of TNT, three grenade throwers and 12 grenades.
"Moreover, six police uniforms left by the bandits were discovered in the deserted houses in Grozny," the press release says.
Presently, preliminary interrogations of the detained militants have helped establish gang leaders who planned the provocative sortie, the routes of movement and also places of militants' gathering.
"During the checks of one of the places named by the detained militants, an extremist group was discovered. Federal helicopters shelled the area in hand," the press release says.
Federal subdivisions were sent to the site to detain survivals and collect their weapons, the press release says.
"Searches are continuing," the document says.
The special operation in Grozny was held on Saturday evening and resulted in elimination of over 50 bandits. Six Chechen police officers and four people from the interior troops died in the battle with the militants. Twelve Russian people from the interior troops are in hospital.
According to the regional HQ report received yesterday, harmonised efforts of the federal forces and Chechen law-enforcers helped prevent the seizure of Grozny facilities and avoid serious losses.
Bandits only managed to shell several facilities in the Chechen capital, the report says. "In particular, they shelled two polling stations (early presidential elections in Chechnya are due on August 29), several checkpoints, two buildings of the district interior affairs' departments and two military commandant's offices of Grozny districts. The bandits also shelled a convoy with military equipment of the Russian interior ministry moving to reinforce a checkpoint in Grozny," the document specifies.
An inquiry has been launched into the August 21 developments in Grozny, Russia's deputy prosecutor general, Sergei Fridinsky, told RIA Novosti on Sunday.
According to him, the criminal case was opened on the basis of Articles 205 (terrorism), 317 (attempt on the life of law-enforcers), and 105 (murder) of the Russian Criminal Code.
