MOLDOVA CELEBRATES 60TH ANNIVERSARY OF LIBERATION

CHISINAU, August 23 (RIA Novosti's Vladimir Novosadyuk) - On Monday and Tuesday Moldova will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the republic's liberation from the Nazis.

On August 23, the eve of the anniversary, an evening party and concert will be held at a palace in Chisinau.

Tens of thousands of Chisinau residents and guests will gather at the Military Glory Memorial on August 24, the anniversary of the end of the Yassy-Kishinev operation in 1944, to pay homage to the memory of the fallen soldiers and honor the veterans of World War II.

In 1944, Soviet troops on the 2nd and 3rd Ukrainian Fronts, the Black Sea Fleet and the Danube Military Flotilla surrounded and defeated the Germany's main forces in the southern Ukraine, and liberated Moldavia and the eastern part of Romania. Romania withdrew from the war and on August 24, its new leadership declared war on Germany.

All populated areas in Moldova are expected to celebrate the 60th anniversary of liberation from the Nazis. The events will end with a celebratory salute in Chisinau.
